The unique island of Dominica is the only place

Caribs have survived and live together as a group
in their own community.

and noble remaining poeple who once ruled the Eastern

a real Carib style lunch.
Here you would forget about the hustle and bustle
of the commericial world, relax and enjoy nature,
the humming of the birds and the way it should be.

Indian
River Cabrits National Park Tour
Duration: 5-6 hours
Recommended - Rowboat trip
This tour can also be done after your diving day
- you will get back to the Lodge at supper time.
Drive along the West Coast to Portsmouth the island's
second largest town. Ross Medical School is also
located there.
In Portsmouth, the famous Indian River boys will
all try to compete for your attention with claims
that one is better than than the other we reccomend
that you only take the Rowboats which are environmentally
friendly, take your time to look carefully as this
is the home of herons, kingfishers and you will
sometimes also see the occasion iguanas laping up
the sun shine, as you row up this famous Indian
River, where the Carib Indians once lived and used
this route with their native Canoes to get to the
sea. The verdant vegetation along the river banks
is dominated by intricately buttressed Mang trees.
The rowboats go to an area where the river narrows
and where you can take a walk to the bush bar for
a cool drink.
Next visit would be to the Cabrits National Park
which is an 18th century still waging war against
the army of time. This garrison was abandoned as
military post in 1854 and was taken over by the
forest. In 1982 the historian Lennox Honeychurch
got involved in the restorations of Fort Shirley,
the main fort of the garrison.... ruins of some
of the batteries and the Commandant's house are
still standing.
