verdant Roseau Valley. There will be stops

village of Laudat. From Laudat we take a 15

and means “Little Throat Hole”.
Literally, we will swim up the “throat”
of a mountain to a waterfall located inside
this gorge. This gorge was formed many thousands
of years ago and is fed by the waters of the
Fresh Water Lake. The formation of the rock
walls on either side of the gorge, through

this place is truly one of the wonder of Dominica.
“Pirates of the Caribbean” also
included this Gorge in one of their scenes.
After the Gorge, you would proceed to your
second location. The spectacular “Twin
Falls of Trafalgar” it’s a 15

over the boulders to the base of one of the
falls where there is a great pool for more
swimming, in both types of water temperature.

falls in a hot sulphur pool or climb a little
higher to the cool water.

the Layou Valley Ridge. All along, dramatic
necking breaking views.
Emerald pool, one of the island’s beautiful
waterfalls is within the rainforest of the
Morne Trois Piton National Park. It is about

SPANNY FALLS & LAYOU RIVER TOUR
Tour #3
These waterfalls are relatively new to the
general Public as it is located in a private
estate of Spanny. Spanny is a well known farmer
than also operates a local pit stop bar, most
local people visit this bar for bush rum.
Local bush like Anise, Cinnamon Spice and
Lemon Grass are all soaked for ages in a cask
rum flavoring the rum. Locals take a quick
shot of these rums to start or end their day.
Recommended: 1 shot of bush rum after soaking
in the waterfalls to get your blood pumping
again.
Spanny Falls are two really spectacular waterfalls
in Dominica’s forested interior. The
walk starts off through agricultural lands
and then descends into a river course and
suddenly out of the blue (unexpected) you
are encountering the sound of water. Around
a quick bend this magnificent waterfalls surprises
you, as it’s least expected to be in
this area. There is a very large pool at the
base of this falls, perfect for a quick swim
as this water is extremely invigorating and
the power from the height of the falls are
a quick way to have a free massage.
The second fall is reached by continuing
up a steep incline, on the opposite side of
this fall, here you have to propel yourself
with the help of a rope, as due to the spray
of the waterfall the ground is wet and well
soaked and the incline caused you to lean
backwards, you then would climb for a good
10 -14 minutes descending into another river
course towards the 2nd waterfall. The second
waterfall is a lot more lightsome due to the
opening in the hill, so the water seems to
be less cold. Both of these falls have beautiful
pools at their bases, a refreshing swim in
one or both would certainly rejuvenate you.
LAYOU RIVER EXPERIENCE
After your swim at Spanny and a quick shot
of rum, climb back into your tour bus to encounter
the exciting Layou Valley drive. You would
be passing along fields of bananas, pineapples,
oranges, grapefruits, ferns (all types - very
large tree ferns), gingers (pink and red lilies)
and Mountain ridges. The air here has a different
feel, as sulphur is also mixed in with all
the fresh breezes. The driver will also be
pointing you to the long river that winds
itself downwards towards the sea. You would
then come to a clearing, near a bridge where
the river flows under. Here you would then
be taken through banana fields downwards to
this river, where it has formed a little beach
with sand. Normally, if it has not been raining
you can clearly see some river fish, jump
with joy at the first sights of sunlight.
You can take a swim across this river to it’s
natural hot underground sulphur water. It
keeps you young to go from cold to hot and
then cold again.
Your drive back home will pass through tiny
villages built on the street of Mahaut and
Massacre.
